Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer free estimates?
For repairs and troubleshooting, we start with a $129 professional diagnostic. This allows us to properly diagnose the issue and prevents guessing.

What does the $129 professional diagnostic cover?
The professional diagnostic covers an initial on-site review with basic system testing and troubleshooting to identify a specific issue and determine next steps.
It does not include extended diagnostics such as locating complex issues or leaks.
What if the problem is more complex?
If the issue requires extended diagnostics, we will explain the situation, review pricing, and get your approval before continuing. You stay in control the entire time.
Why don’t you give prices over the phone?
Irrigation problems can appear easy to fix but no repair is the same.
For example, a leaking valve located underground near a palm tree that has roots in and around the valve could take significantly longer to repair versus a valve that is raised off the ground and has no roots around it.
Without seeing and testing the issue, any price given would be a guess. Our process ensures an accurate evaluation and fair pricing.
Will I know the price before repairs begin?
Yes. All pricing is upfront and approved before any work is performed.
What’s the difference between a professional diagnostic and a full inspection?
A professional diagnostic is focused on diagnosing a specific issue you’re experiencing.
A full system inspection is a comprehensive review of your entire irrigation system, designed to identify current and potential issues and provide a bill of health.
How much does a typical sprinkler repair cost in San Diego?
Every system is unique. Most standard repairs range from $200-$600.
If completing multiple repairs or updating the system, the cost can be $1000+ depending on scope of work.
The best way to get accurate pricing is to have a professional review your specific system in person.
Factors like invasive roots, location of repair, and complexity of job requires an on-site assessment .
PRO-TIP: Beware of phone estimates. A contractor who bids too low without seeing the job may later demand more money or cut corners to stay under budget. See our pricing page to learn more about our philosophy.
Why won't my sprinklers turn on, or why won't they shut off?
If your system won't turn on, it is typically due to a power issue at the controller, a wiring fault, or a closed "irrigation specific" shut-off valve.
If watering zone won't shut off, you likely have a "stuck valve" or leaking valve caused by a broken or obstructed diaphragm. This requires immediate attention to prevent property flooding and expensive water bills.
Why is one specific sprinkler zone not working?
When one zone fails while others function correctly, the issue is usually a faulty solenoid (the electrical component on the valve) or a broken wire.
Our technicians use specialized diagnostic equipment to locate wires and valves to perform precise electrical repairs.
Why are my sprinkler heads not popping up or spraying correctly?
This is usually caused by low water pressure or a physical blockage.
In San Diego’s hard-water environment, mineral buildup and debris frequently clog nozzles.
Or, there could be a break or leak diverting water before it can reach the sprinkler heads.
I have a high water bill—can you find the leak?
Yes. Leak detection is our specialty. If you see a leak or have a sudden spike in your San Diego water bill, we can run several diagnostic tests to pinpoint the irrigation leak and stop the water waste.
PRO-TIP: Locate your main water shut-off valves today. If your system lacks a dedicated sprinkler shut-off valve, we highly recommend installing one. This allows you to isolate the irrigation system without cutting off water to your entire home during an irrigation mainline leak.
What is the best watering schedule for San Diego?
To comply with San Diego County Water Authority guidelines and maintain a healthy landscape, we recommend deep, infrequent watering.
Typically, this means watering 2–3 days per week in the early morning during warmer months and reducing to 1–2 days per week in cooler seasons. This encourages deep root growth and drought tolerance.

PRO-TIP: Aim to water in the early morning. Watering when morning dew is present knocks the dew off your plants and grass and into the soil, giving you a little extra water without the cost!
Why do I have brown or yellow landscape even though my sprinklers are running?
Brown landscape usually indicates "poor coverage," occurring when heads are misaligned, spaced too far apart, or blocked by mature plants. We adjust the "arc" and "radius" of your heads to ensure head-to-head coverage.
Conversely, yellowing plants are often a sign of overwatering.
Keep in mind that during San Diego "winters," certain grasses, plants, and trees go dormant—they may look dead, but they are simply resting!
Can you install a Smart Controller to help me save water?
Absolutely. We install Wi-Fi Smart Controllers that automatically adjust based on real-time local weather data.
These systems can reduce water usage by 50%, can save you a significant amount of money annually, and can be monitored directly from your smartphone.
We also install rain sensors and flow meters providing you the most advanced water-saving solutions.
PRO-TIP: With San Diego facing steep water rate increases (30% in the last two years and another 30% proposed through 2029) investing in smart irrigation is the "new solar." Modern water solutions can save you thousands of dollars over the next decade.
Should I switch my planter beds to drip irrigation?
We highly recommend it. Drip irrigation is the most efficient way to water in Southern California.
It delivers water directly to the root zone, eliminating evaporation and runoff while preventing water damage to your home’s foundation or stucco.
Do I need to "winterize" my sprinklers in San Diego?
Most San Diego homes do not require "winterizing." However, homes at higher elevations inland should do blowouts prior to cold snaps causing the ground to freeze.
Aim for late November to mid-December or sooner if forecasts show prolonged lows below 32°F.
Additionally, we recommend a minimum of two tune-ups per year to adjust controllers for the season and inspect the system for leaks.
Relying on a gardener who may lack irrigation expertise can often lead to neglected issues and costly long-term repairs.

We carry standard parts on our trucks to ensure same-day repairs whenever possible.
I have a gardener—can’t they handle the repairs?

We are frequently called to "fix the fix" after a gardener or handyman was unable to complete the repair correctly.
Irrigation is a science and art that requires specific knowledge of hydraulics and electrical components.

Yes. Victory Sprinkler is fully licensed and insured for residential and commercial irrigation work in California. Hiring a licensed contractor protects your property and ensures all work meets local San Diego codes.

Do I need to be home for the repair?
We prefer you are home for the initial site-visit so we can access the controller (often located in the garage) and explain the necessary repairs.
However, if your controller is accessible outdoors, we can often perform the service while you are away.
